Herron's Mills, originally known as Gillies Mills, is a ghost town in the municipality of Lanark Highlands, Lanark County in Eastern Ontario, Canada, near the community of is located on highway between Perth and Calabogie, Ontario. Businessman John Gillies established a history of Herrons Mills on the Clyde book on the Clyde River in the community in to supply lumber for construction in the area.
I nthe Herron's Mills Bridge was opened, with a new sign, proudly proclaiming the name of the tiny village, standing alongside it. The only problem is there's nothing there. Herron's Mills is a ghost town and has been for many years.
With the exception of one house built by John Gillies, the original founder of the mills, Herron's Mills is nothing but ruins. Gillies' Mills remained for sale until when the Herron brothers, James and John, also immigrants from Scotland, arrived. In contrast to John Gillies' somewhat jaded view of the area's long-term prospects, the Herrons were enthusiastic about the area's future and purchased the mills along with acres of cleared farm land.
The ponderous wheels and massive gears spring to life with a surge of power that makes the mill house shudder, and which explains why early mills had hand-hewn beams of such tremendous proportions.
“Killed in his mill” was a frequent epitaph of two hundred years ago. Herron's Mills thrived for many years until the advent of the great depression in the s. By the early 40s, a number of the mills had been shut down. The sawmill continued to operate sporadically untilwhen it was shut down permanently.
Herron's Mills gradually fell. The late, military artist Clyde Heron has received numerous awards for his paintings: the Plainsman Award; the Arrowhead Award; the Golden Spur; and the Jefferson Davis Medal is of particular significance.
